How to become an Amazon Flex delivery driver in London

Driving in London can offer more than just Uber trips. Many private hire drivers are now looking at side opportunities like Amazon Flex to make extra income during quieter periods. If you’re already driving with Uber and have a PCO-approved vehicle, Amazon Flex can be a smart way to maximise your time on the road.

At Splend, our drivers use their cars primarily for UberX and higher ride types such as Uber Comfort and Uber Exec. But when demand slows, some drivers turn to Amazon Flex to fill gaps in their schedule and bring in additional weekly income.

Here’s everything you need to know about becoming an Amazon Flex driver in London — and how it fits into your driving business.

What is Amazon Flex?

Amazon Flex is a delivery programme that allows drivers to pick up parcels from Amazon delivery stations and drop them off to customers. It works in a similar way to rideshare platforms, but instead of passengers you’re transporting packages.

Drivers sign up for delivery “blocks” that usually last between two and four hours. Each block pays a fixed amount, and the more efficiently you deliver parcels, the more you can earn in that time. You can choose blocks that suit your schedule in the Amazon Flex app, with clear upfront payment shown for each one.

Who can drive with Amazon Flex in London and what car do I need?

To drive with Amazon Flex in London, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Hold a UK drivers licence

  • Pass a background check

  • Have a smartphone to run the Amazon Flex app

Your vehicle must:

  • Be a mid-sized car or larger with at least 5 seats, or a van/enclosed pickup truck

  • Be in good working condition with a valid MOT

  • Protect parcels from the weather

  • Have the appropriate insurance

Tip: Splend rideshare-ready cars are already PCO-approved and designed for Uber driving, so they also meet Amazon Flex requirements. If you’re a Splend driver, you’re one step ahead.

How does Amazon Flex fit with Uber driving?

With Amazon Flex, you can choose scheduled delivery blocks that fit around your driving routine. By treating it as a top-up option, you can earn extra without risking your main income from Uber.

Pick scheduled delivery blocks during off-peak hours, evenings, weekends, or take short breaks as an Uber Driver to earn extra income without affecting your main earnings.

How much can I earn with Amazon Flex UK?

According to Amazon UK, drivers can earn between £14 - £18 an hour, depending on location, delivery block availability, and efficiency. You’ll see your expected earnings in the app before you accept a block.

Drivers are paid weekly, with payments deposited into your account every Wednesday for the previous week’s completed deliveries.

Tip: Certain services like Prime Now allow tipping (£1–£5/block), which adds to earnings.

What insurance do I need for Amazon Flex UK?

To deliver with Amazon Flex, you’ll need:

  • A valid motor insurance policy (as legally required)

  • Hire and Reward insurance (often referred to as commercial insurance)

This covers you for delivering goods in exchange for payment. Splend’s all-inclusive Flexi plans for PCO drivers include the correct level of PHV damage and loss cover, making it easier to cover both Uber and Amazon Flex work.

Pros and cons of Amazon Flex

Like any side opportunity, Amazon Flex comes with benefits and challenges:

ProsCons
Flexible schedule – choose delivery blocks that fit around your Uber trips. Not a replacement for Uber – lower earning potential compared to full-time Uber driving.
Extra income – top up your weekly earnings when Uber demand slows. Limited availability – blocks can book out quickly, especially in busy areas.
Simple onboarding – easy app sign-up and quick background check. Parcel handling – some drivers may prefer passenger rides over deliveries.

About Splend

At Splend, we believe in drivers. We know their vehicles need to work harder than most; that they drive more miles than most; that their insurance is hefty; their maintenance costs high and that they can face unreasonable finance rates – which is a heavy load to carry on their own.

That’s why at Splend, we exist to support rideshare drivers with a new model, that takes all those car ownership costs, and provides them for less, with lower purchase prices, better rates, lower servicing and insurance costs – all for one weekly repayment, all in one place.
